Scale signal: GitHub reports 473.3 billion monthly Git events in August 2026, 7.38 billion developer-and-agent commits and 3.26 billion Actions runs in September 2026, and a target workload that includes thousands of agents operating against one codebase. The source reports global aggregate activity and internal benchmarks, not a causal measurement of agent-only traffic or a completed production migration.

OBSERVED

GitHub reports that total Git activity increased from 218.2 billion events in September 2025 to 473.3 billion events in August 2026, while its busiest repository received roughly one billion requests during August 2026.

GitHub reports 7.38 billion commits in September 2026, more than five times the volume one year earlier. The reported figure combines activity from developers and agents rather than attributing a measured share to either group.

Pushes increased from 0.69 billion to 3.35 billion per month year over year, and pull-request merges grew to nearly four times their earlier volume.

GitHub Actions ran 3.26 billion times in September 2026, more than four times the volume one year earlier. GitHub describes how each push can fan out into thousands of reads from systems such as CI and code scanning.

GitHub identifies several constraints in agent-scale workloads: tight agent loops make individual push latency material, thousands of agents writing on separate branches produce sustained write pressure, and merges contend on a shared reference.

GitHub's existing Spokes architecture stores full repository copies on several fileservers, five by default, and uses a three-phase commit protocol with a quorum for reference updates. Adding replicas increases read capacity but also adds participants to each write, coupling read scale, durability, and write latency.

The new architecture is designed to coordinate only the reference update that requires agreement while allowing object storage, connectivity validation, and secret scanning to proceed independently or in parallel.

GitHub is moving compaction and garbage collection away from request-serving hosts into separate workers operating against durable storage so repository maintenance does not share the serving path with pushes and fetches.

GitHub is separating authoritative repository storage in Azure Blob Storage from lightweight compute workers that cache and serve data, allowing read capacity to scale without adding durable replicas to every write path.

GitHub states that the architecture must retain existing branching, review, merge, history, branch-protection, audit, visibility, and approval controls as automated activity increases.

GitHub reports that the new architecture has delivered up to 35 times higher write throughput in internal benchmarks, with read capacity scaling independently.

INTERPRETATION

GitHub provides direct infrastructure-level evidence for Selection. Repository architecture that was viable for predominantly human-paced development encounters new constraints when automated actors commit, push, fetch, validate, and merge at much higher frequency and concurrency. Push latency, durable write throughput, shared-reference contention, read fan-out, maintenance work, failure recovery, governance, and observability become environmental conditions that determine whether agent fleets can operate reliably at scale. GitHub's response also shows that scaling is not only a matter of adding compute: the substrate must reduce unnecessary coordination while preserving the narrow agreement points and human controls required for correctness.

MODEL IMPLICATION

SUPPORTS. Supports Selection by documenting an engineering environment being redesigned around the observed and anticipated workload characteristics of concurrent developers and agents. It supplies quantitative scale indicators and identifies concrete constraints that select against the existing coupled architecture. The source does not support C03 by itself: concurrent activity and infrastructure coordination do not establish that cooperation among agentic engineering objects improves fitness relative to useful isolated operation.

OPEN QUESTION

As agent-generated repository activity grows, which combinations of write throughput, reference coordination, verification fan-out, governance, and human review capacity become the binding constraints on useful software delivery?
